Immigration officials have confirmed that Jamaican-born Canadian Islamic preacher, Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips, is being detained for security reasons in the Philippines, who has now agreed to be deported on Saturday. According to immigration spokeswoman, Elaine Tan, Mr. Philips will be flown back to Canada as soon as possible.

Tan explained that the government can now fly him out without going through deportation proceedings because “he voluntarily requested to be deported.” It was explained that Philips was detained by police in the city of Davao last weekend, when he planned to conduct a lecture tour in the south. Tan revealed that “he was blacklisted (due to) information that he may conduct activities that are a threat to our national security,” adding that the government aims to fly out Philips quickly, but could not yet give a specific date.

According to the regional police spokesman, Superintendent Tony Rivera, they were ordered to hold Philips due to security advisories from several countries, speculating that he might have ties to extremist groups and labelling him as “dangerous.” In a post published on his Facebook page on September 10, Philips wrote that “I am safe and well-treated in Davao City immigration custody.” In addition to that, Philips also denied the allegations about him being involved with extremists, expressing hope that he might eventually be allowed back into the Philippines. Philips confessed that he has been blacklisted in the United States, Britain, Australia and Kenya, but that was mostly due to the statements taken out of context.

  1. Dr. Bilal Philips is not an ‘extremist’. I know him because I’m a Muslim who happens to be an avcomment_ID listener of his lectures. Many non-Muslims claim that he is preaching to ‘revive’ the spirit of Muslims to fight against the country. That is indeed a form of stereotyping. On the contrary, Dr. Philips is disseminating information through lectures to spread peace as well. He, as well as many other Islamic preachers, is doing it not just for their own benefit but for the sake of Allah (SWT). In fact, if you try to listen to his lectures, prayer and peace are two of the main messages it conveys. Now, how can we achieve peace by hampering the dissemination of peace itself? There even was a rally that took place Marawi due to the alleged detention and consequent banning of Dr. Philips in the Philippines. In addition to that, religious biases and prejudices seem to be wafting in the society and the community nowadays. You never heard a single reaction from us Muslims when popes from Vatican came to the Philippines. If you don’t believe in Allah (SWT), AT LEAST, respect our Religion as much as we respect yours. Wake up brothers and sisters.
