Key candidates of Toronto’s iconic mayoral race, Olivia Chow and John Tory, hurled critical questions at each other from separate news conferences only a block apart on midday Sunday. Ms. Chow was present outside government buildings on Bay Street near Queen’s Park, where she recalled Tory’s comments from 2006.

Recalling the comments made by Mr. Tory in the past, Chow pointed out that “instead of standing up for Toronto, he promised, when he was the leader of the Progressive Conservatives, he would ship 5,000 jobs outside the city.” The 2007 Conservative platform referred that Tory, if elected premier, “would move 10 per cent of the government office space in Toronto and thousands of jobs to smaller communities,” whereas Chow stressed that “either he’s just saying anything to get elected or (he) really doesn’t care much about the city.”

Whereas on the other hand, Mr. Tory’s held a press conference soon after noon at Queen’s Park Circle and pointed out that the said remarks were made seven years ago. He stated that “I was a provincial party leader at the time and I had the interests of the entire province to look after,” explaining that “I would point out, by the way, that Olivia Chow endorsed a cycling policy back in, I think, 2001 that contemplated having bike lanes on Richmond and Adelaide. And it took Denzil Minnan-Wong — not her, Denzil Minnan-Wong — thirteen years later to actually get those into a pilot project stage.”
