A Liberal politician who has stressed that the national anthem is sexist, MP Mauril Belanger, has expressed hope that his fellow lawmakers will support his bid to make the lyrics of ‘O Canada’ more inclusive. A private member’s bill was introduced by Mr. Belanger on Monday, which aimed to change just two words in the anthem, namely the lyrics that say “True patriot love in all thy sons command” to “True patriot love, in all of us command.”
Addressing the House of Commons on Monday, Mr. Belanger stated that “the bill proposes a simple change in the English version only,” adding that “it’s something that I have been reflecting on for quite a while because I think it would reflect the evolution of our country and our society over the last century.” Furthermore, he added on Tuesday that “I think it’s time that we have a national anthem that is more inclusive.” In addition to that, Belanger pointed out that he has one grandson and two granddaughters, and “so why would it be that my national anthem would command true patriot love to my grandson only and not to my granddaughters as well.”
In case the bill passes, it wouldn’t be the first time the lyrics will be changed. The original lyrics having “thou dost in us command” were adopted in 1908, and later changed to “in all thy sons command” in 1914. There are several prominent Canadian women, including former Prime Minister Kim Campbell and author Margaret Atwood, who have formed a ‘Restore Our Anthem’ campaign aimed at changing the same two words Belanger has set his sights on.
The song is a very old song and the lyrics reflect the situation AT THE TIME !!!! Leave the lyrics alone ! Leave it to a useless, POS frog to change this ! I’m a liberal and this frog is not a liberal !
