Peel Regional Police has confirmed that a man was shot to death by police during a traffic stop in Brampton, Ont., last night at around 10:04 p.m. ET. It was explained that a police officer made a stop at Queen Street and Kennedy Road in Brampton, i.e. about 45 kilometres west of Toronto, where the incident took place.

One of the witnesses who saw the incident, Richard Appleby, confirmed to be outside on a break from his job at Crabby Joe’s restaurant at the time. He explained to have seen the man walk slowly towards officers with his arms outstretched when he was shot. Appleby recalled that “I heard the police officer say ‘drop the knife’ a couple of times and something to effect of ‘don’t make us shoot you,” adding that “like, ‘we don’t want to shoot you, drop the knife.'” Thereafter, Appleby reported to have heard four shots but did not see a knife.

Police has confirmed that the suspect was shifted to Brampton Civic Hospital without vital signs, where he was later pronounced dead. Appleby stated that “I had never seen anybody get shot. I’ve never seen a real gun even be shot,” adding that “it’s not like the movies. I just saw him drop. I was just praying that they were rubber bullets. I don’t know what was going on. I thought they were going to Taser him.” The authorities have called in province’s Special Investigations Unit since it investigates all instances involving someone being killed or injured during an interaction with police.
