Multiple Ottawa shootings on Wednesday morning resulted in death of two people after at least one gunman stormed Parliament Hill. One of the dead is a soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial while the other was the gunman who opened fire in Centre Block across the street.

According to the police, there were multiple gunmen behind the attack. However, confirmed updates about the incident are anticipated to be revealed in a scheduled afternoon press conference. Consequently, several police sources are still not confirming how many shooters were involved, or the motive behind it. The forces are still searching vehicles in the downtown, where blocks of the city’s core were locked down all day. The incident took place at around 10 a.m., just outside where the Conservative caucus was meeting.

The Prime Minister’s Office said Stephen Harper was safely removed from the building. According to Treasury Board President, Tony Clement, “(Harper) was addressing caucus, then a huge boom, followed by rat-a-tat shots. We all scattered. It was clearly right outside our caucus door.” Thereafter, the shooter received return fire and was soon killed outside the parliamentary library. Meanwhile Veterans Affairs Minister, Julian Fantino, mentioned from inside Parliament that “all the details are not in, but the sergeant-at-arms, a former Mountie, is the one that engaged the gunman, or one of them at least, and stopped this.” He added that “he did a great job and, from what I know, shot the gunman and he is now deceased.”
