This year’s Remembrance Day has come less than a month after the deaths of Canadian soldiers in Quebec and Ottawa and just weeks after Canada’s military got involved in the Middle East. Hence, this year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies are scheduled to be held under noticeably increased security.

According to an OPP spokesperson, officers of the provincial force have been directed to wear their regular uniforms rather than the dress uniforms. Whereas, the head of the Toronto’s police union, Mike McCormack, has asked for off-duty officers to be allowed to carry weapons at this year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies. McCormack stated that “these terrorist organizations are targeting our members and saying ‘Do harm to them.’ They are not going to say ‘Only do it while they’re on duty.’” Whereas on the other hand, Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair has refused to allow the move, saying that no specific threats have been brought to his attention. He alleged that “I’m not prepared to authorize the carrying of firearms for all police officers off-duty.”

Guelph Police has revealed that volunteer officers will be on reserve as cadets guard the city’s cenotaph overnight, but didn’t plan to provide more security than normal during the Remembrance Day ceremony itself. Meanwhile Waterloo Regional Police, Chief Bryan Larkin also stated that officers will stay out of dress tunics but no additional officers will be deployed specifically for security. Bryn alleged that “although we want to remain vigilant, for us, it’s business as usual” adding that “the important thing around Remembrance Day is supporting our veterans.”
