Toronto’s Mayor-elect John Tory has confirmed having Jewish heritage. A report issued on Friday by The Times of Israel alleged that Tory is Jewish “at least according to halacha, Jewish law.” The newspaper pointed out that the Jewish law dictates that Jewish heritage be traced through the mother’s blood lines and according to that, Tory is considered Jewish.

The news was confirmed by Mr. Tory as he publicly confirmed on Friday that his maternal grandmother was born to a Jewish family. Tory mentioned on Friday that “of course I knew that,” adding that “I’m very happy about my entire background. I’m proud of all my ancestors — they are people who came from all different walks of life and came from different countries around the world.” In addition to that, Mr. Tory assured that he still has “many, many Jewish relatives today” but is a member of the United Church of Canada. Tory alleged that “I grew up as a member of the United Church and that’s what I am today although the minister at the church would say perhaps he hasn’t seen me as often as he might like.”

Jewish heritage became a topic of discussion during the mayoral election after Tory’s rival Doug Ford brought up his “Jewish doctor, my Jewish dentist, my Jewish lawyer, my Jewish accountant” at a debate. In response to the finger pointing, Ford revealed the next day that his wife was Jewish, adding that his wife had “Jewish blood lines” but does not practice the Jewish faith.
