Upon arriving at the Great Hall of the People, Prime Minister Stephen Harper met Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Saturday, who straightforwardly indicated that China has no plans to release the Canadian couple suspected of spaying as the case would proceed according to China’s judicial system.

The official statement, regarding the fate of Kevin and Julia Garrett, was issued as Li and Harper participated in the signing of government and private business deals between the two countries up to almost $2.5 billion worth. Li stated that “as for individual cases, I want to reiterate that as China continues to build a country under the rule of law, we believe that judicial authorities in China should be able to handle cases in accordance with the law.” He mentioned in a news conference that “at the same time, lawful rights of the people concerned should also be protected.” Mr. Harper did not comment on the issue as Canada has never formally asked China to release the couple.

Before Mr. Harper and Li addressed the media, he did mentioned that “we’ve discussed the full range of issues in our bilateral relations in a frank, open and friendly matter.” Their talks had touched on “both the rule of law and human rights.” Li alleged that “I want to say that China is building a country under the rule of law and there is a clear stipulation in Chinese constitutional law that human rights must be respected and protected.”
