Former Deputy Prime Minister, Sheila Copps, has finally come out and alleged that she was sexually assaulted during her time at the Queen’s Park as Hamilton MPP and also claimed to have been raped by someone she knew at a different occasion. According to Copps, she encountered a “grievous personal lapse in judgment” last week when she supported Jian Ghomeshi on Twitter.

Copps mentioned in an online column published on Monday in The Hill Times that she “should never have weighed in on an issue as sensitive as that without taking the time to hear the other side of the story.” Additionally, she also referenced to the serious misconduct complaints lodged by two NDP MPs against two Liberal members who were ejected by party leader for the duration of investigation at least. In her remarks, Copps stated that “unfortunately no Canadian police force can investigate a complaint on Parliament Hill,” because “the Hill workplace is not subject to provincial labour laws, which offer protection in every other place of employment in Ontario.”

Revealing the incident she encountered, Copps revealed that another member of the Ontario legislature pushed himself on her in a northern hotel hallway, during her time as a Liberal politician, after a day-long parliamentary session on violence against women. Copps stated that “I pushed back on my assailant, kicking him where it hurts, when he tried to force me up against a wall and kiss me.”
