Manitoba Premier, Greg Selinger, has publicly released his plans to put his leadership at the behest of Manitobans, allowing them to choose the best person to lead the province. According to a statement released by Selinger on late Monday, he aimed to end confusion regarding the nature of a proposed leadership contest in March.

A statement released by the NDP quoted Selinger saying that “it’s time to put this question of leadership into a democratic arena where I’m ready, willing and able to show why I was elected leader of the party by our members and elected premier by Manitoba voters.” Selinger added that “it’s important we clarify the rules governing any challenge to the leadership of the NDP. We must follow the party constitution and the Manitoba NDP’s tradition of democratic practices.”

Furthermore, the statement elucidated that several NDP executive, who convened over the weekend, accepted his proposal to place the party’s leadership back in the hands of party members. Selinger met with the Manitoba NDP provincial executive via conference call Saturday morning, and agreed to form a committee that would recommend a process for the March 2015 provincial NDP convention and allow Selinger and others to stand for election as leader. Selinger stated that “given the events of recent weeks I felt it appropriate that NDP members have the opportunity to deal directly with the leadership of our party,” adding that “this is our party’s historical practice and the appropriate measure today.”
