During a recent speech at the annual Hamilton Trillium dinner, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne alleged that she thinks her party won a majority government because voters supported its conviction that “government can and must be a force for a good in our lives,” adding “not that government represents either the whole of the problem or the whole of the solution.”
Consequently, Premier Wynne concluded on Wednesday night that “what the other parties were saying — either it was all one or the other. But, when we combine the tools of government with the strengths of our talented people we can build more opportunity and security for everyone. I really believe people chose us to lead and to govern because they were looking for meaningful and practical solutions.” According to the premier, voters were not swayed by the left or the right of the political spectrum. Quite noticeably, Liberals grabbed 58 seats on June 12, followed by the Progressive Conservatives who got 28 and New Democrats secured 21 seats. Wynne stated that “they don’t want a government consumed by ideology,” explaining that “there’s rigidity in ideology. It’s narrow and it’s divisive. I think what people want is what is practical.”
Almost 500 attendee were present at the LIUNA Station dinner, including cabinet ministers Charles Sousa, Ted McMeekin, Deb Matthews, Eric Hoskins and David Zimmer. Among others, several mayors and mayors-elect were also present, including Fred Eisenberger, Bob Bratina, Rick Goldring, Rob Burton, Bonnie Crombie (Mississauga), Linda Jeffrey (Brampton) and Jim Diodati (Niagara Falls).
