Officials have confirmed that members of the public will not be allowed to walk up the great stairs and enter the Alberta Legislature through its main entrance under the imperial portico from Monday onwards. According to the announcement, main doors are being closed for security reasons and so the members of the public will be advised to enter through the west doors.

According to the announcement made by the Speaker, Gene Zwozdesky, on Friday, the west entrance would entail increased screening and metal detectors. It was explained that the main doors were closed since there was no room to accommodate large groups of people and scanning equipment such as metal detectors. Zwozdesky added that “what we’ve decided is to move all public access to the ground floor doors at the west end where we will have infinitely more room and people will be able to enter the building with greater ease.” The security protocols were reviewed by legislature officials after the tragic death of Canadian soldier Cpl., Nathan Cirillo, and the subsequent attack on Parliament Hill.

It was highlighted that the legislature building already has metal detectors for members of the public to pass through before they entered the gallery spaces overlooking the floor of the house. Zwozdesky stated that “in reviewing and enhancing our protocols, which we’ve been looking at doing for some time now, we decided that we would include those kinds of scanning operations also at the entrance doors on the west side.”
