Sources have confirmed that a secretive Commons committee will soon start drafting a sexual harassment policy for MPs in light of the recent allegations brought to light regarding two Liberal MPs earlier this month. Liberal leader Trudeau dismissed two MPs, Scott Andrews and Massimo Pacetti, from the caucus earlier this month in response to harassment allegations from two NDP MPs.
It was soon highlighted by parliamentarians that none of the sexual harassment policies on the Hill apply to Parliamentarians, especially when an MP launches a complaint against another MP. The Board of Internal Economy (BOIE) is anticipated to meet on Tuesday in order to start drafting such a policy. At the time of Liberal MPs’ dismissal, Liberal party whip Judy Foote addressed a strong worded letter to House Speaker, Andrew Scheer, discussing allegations made against the two MPs and urged Scheer to “initiate a process that could lead to a proper investigation of the facts and an appropriate resolution.” “There is no precedent or established process for dealing with a situation such as this.” Foote mentioned in the letter that “I believe the BOIE should be urgently seized of the matter.”
In addition to that, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair also addressed a letter last week to the prime minister and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, detailing his ideas for an MP harassment policy. NDP spokesperson later confirmed to the press that “we’ve sent a letter to all parties with concrete proposals and we’re expecting them to be discussed (Tuesday).”
