An Ottawa court heard on Monday how 22-year-old Andrew Bettencourt allegedly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend after demanding to see her for a “sentimental goodbye.” The victim insistently kept telling him that it was over but got stuck in an alleged six-hour abduction at knifepoint, with him delivering vicious beatings and her in fear for her life. She was allegedly so spooked up that she also made a video at his behest saying she had gone willingly.

The women, who was 18 at the time, testified on Monday at her ex-boyfriend’s kidnapping trial that “I thought I’m not going to come out of this alive. I was scared I’m either going to be dead at the end of this all or I’m going to be in a coma. I didn’t have any faith at all.” She explained how things unfolded on the afternoon of Jan. 23, when she let him drive her BMW for old-time’s sake. She revealed that upon reassuring him that it was over, he went into a rage due to which she tried to grab the wheel and pull over but instead he pulled a knife and yelled “shut the f— up. I don’t want to have to do this to you.”

The court heard that from that moment onwards, she told him whatever he wanted to hear, including that she loved him and they were going to get back together and that she was sorry for grabbing at the wheel.
