69-year-old Brookdale resident, Bill Casey, who left the House of Commons almost five years ago, has announced his decision to seek the federal Liberal nomination in Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley. In case Casey manages to win the nomination, he will land against Conservative MP Scott Armstrong, who was president of the riding association when Casey was the Tory Member of Parliament.

According to Casey’s remarks during the announcement, he alleged that “I’ve never lost my interest in politics and have followed it very closely. I’ve always been interested in Nova Scotia issues and all the talk about the diminishing role of parliamentarians is the motivator that has brought me out of the closet.” Additionally, Casey stated that “members of parliament can no longer do their jobs effectively and the federal government breaks the rules at every turn and you have to sue the government to get any information. The one that really got me going, though, is the fact the government is rendering the tools that parliamentarians use as useless. That’s the motivator.”

Casey has had a very tough time since he left politics, as he fought malignant melanoma in 2006, prostate cancer in 2008 and suffered a heart attack in August 2013. However, he now states that his doctor has not just given him a clean bill of health but also encouraged him to run. Casey mentioned that “he didn’t say, ‘yes, you can do it,’ he encouraged me to do it.”
