In response to Former Conservative MP, Bill Casey, announcing on late Tuesday to seek the Liberal nomination, his former ally and incumbent Tory MP Armstrong said he was ‘personally disappointed’ about the decision. Casey stated that he is returning to politics because he feels the present Tory government has diminished the role of parliamentarians.

In his remarks, Armstrong stated that “in regards to the 2015 election, I am personally disappointed with Mr. Casey’s decision to run for the Liberal Party,” adding that “in 2008, literally tens of thousands of Conservatives in our riding voted for Bill. Hundreds of Conservative volunteers worked for him throughout Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley. Shortly after he won a resounding victory he resigned his seat after less than six months to take another job.” Casey explained that “now for a second time he has turned his back on so many that were loyal to him.”

Armstrong vacated his seat as acting chairman of the Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley riding association in September 2008 to support Casey during his re-election campaign since he allegedly had “strong personal loyalty to Bill and Rosemary Casey and that’s something that’s very important to me.” Casey eventually won the election by a decent lead over NDP candidate Karen Olsson, while the Conservative candidate, Joel Bernard, finished a distant third with only 8.8 per cent of the vote. Thereafter, Casey’s resignation led to Armstrong’s victory in the seat for the Conservatives with 45.8 per cent of the vote, compared to just 25.7 per cent for NDP candidate Mark Austin.
