New revelations have been made regarding the controversial decision earlier this week to not lay criminal charges against a police officer in Quebec, who was over-speeding and lost control of his speeding cruiser, who crashed into another car and killed a 5-year-old boy. It was revealed on Friday that the provincial police officer, travelling at 122-kilometres-an hour in a 50-kilometre-an-hour zone, was actually tailing the former head of the Quebec Liberal party as part of a corruption investigation.

During a joint Ontario-Quebec cabinet meeting in Toronto, Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard alleged that the fact that his political party was under investigation at the time of the fatal crash does not impact any decision regarding the case, including the decision to not lay any charges against the police officer. He mentioned that “a child died here. This is the main thing and the first thing we have to say. It’s the most horrible thing that can happen to a family,” adding that “the second thing is that our chief prosecutor is a totally independent institution that should always remain independent of any pressure from the media or from politicians. This institution is going to take the best decision in the interest of justice.”

Whereas on the other hand, the opposition Parti Québécois has demanded the government to order an external review of the evidence that have warranted the decision to not lay any charges in the fatal crash given the political flavour of the new information that has come to light.
