Toronto’s mayor-elect, John Tory, has declared a conflict of interest and announced to step away from the contentious debate of expanding the island airport. In addition to that, Mr. Tory announced to have resigned from the board of directors of Metro Inc., and Rogers Communications, while excusing himself from breaking a deathbed promise to act as a trustee of various Roger family trusts.

In his remarks, Mr. Tory clarified that he does not intend to participate in any city council discussion related to permission of jets at Billy Bishop airport since his eldest son, John, is the chief executive officer of a Thunder Bay airline, Private Air Inc., which has a regional office at the island airport. He explained that “I cannot in good conscience interfere with my son’s ability to earn an income and support his family because of my decision to seek public office.”

In addition to that, mayor-elect also announced to refrain from any city discussions related to the home renovation company, Stratheden Homes Ltd., since his wife, Barbara Hackett, is its president and he is a director and investor. However, Tory vowed to remain as trustee and director of Rogers family-related trusts and a member of the advisory committee of the Rogers Control Trust. He elucidated that “before his death, I gave my word to Ted Rogers that I would act in this capacity so long as I was able, and out of a sense of moral obligation to my late friend, I do not intend to resign from these positions.”
