A four-alarm house fire in Kensington Market caused extensive damage but no injuries as authorities revealed that the fire broke out in a 100-year-old rowhouse on Oxford Street, near Spadina Avenue and College Street, at around 1 a.m. on Monday. According to Toronto Fire, the incident caused damage of more than $1 million.

Fire officials have speculated that the fire started in the rear of one house, i.e. on a balcony or a deck, and then spread to at least three other units, out of which two had their roof collapsed. The unit where the fire started was gutted while the remaining three had severe damaged. Toronto Fire Services division commander, Bob O’Halloran, stated that “there’s four houses involved … once it gets into the roof, it spreads pretty quickly.” It was confirmed that three people managed to escape the blaze, including one from where the fire started and the other two from the neighbouring units.

Platoon chief, Kevin Shaw, revealed to have seen a man, who lived in the home where the fire started, sleeping at the time of fire. The man’s adult children confirmed that the man’s dog alerted his owner by barking and allowed him to escape the fire. Shaw stated that “I asked how their father was alerted to the fire, and he said his dog was barking and alerted him — that’s how he got out,” adding that “anybody who has pets knows that they sense things before humans do.”
