Israel’s embassy in Ottawa informed on Monday that it cannot confirm whether an Israeli-Canadian woman raised in White Rock, B.C., Gill Rosenberg, was captured by ISIS extremists after joining Kurdish fighters in Syria. Spokesperson for the Israeli embassy in Ottawa, Eitan Weiss, stated that “we haven’t got any concrete information that we can share. Everything is still … speculation,” adding that “both of our governments are anxiously investigating this situation, trying to find out exactly what happened.”
Rosenberg has acquired a considerable number of admirers and well-wishers since she announced on social media to have joined the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, i.e. an attack force encouraging women to fight. 31-year-old Rosenberg is one of very few western females to have joined the fight. Contrary to the rumors that allege Rosenberg is arrested by ISIS fighters, several people commented and posted on her Facebook page on Sunday night stressing that she is safe. One of the respondents on facebook who is affiliated with the People’s Protection Units, Kader Kadandir, clearly stated that the news of Rosenberg’s capture “is a huge lie. She is in Rojava and safe.” In addition to that, Kadandir also posted photos of a woman resembling Gill Rosenberg, though it cannot be confirmed when the photos were taken.
A pro-Islamic-State contributor mentioned in a post to an online forum Saturday that fighters in Kobani had captured a “female Zionist soldier.” Thereafter, SITE Intelligence Group and Jihadi sympathizers speculated that the captive seems to be Rosenberg.
