According to a report recently unveiled by The Public Sector Integrity Commissioner, the RCMP frequently flew aircrafts exceeding legal weight limits and tried to keep it under wraps. The report revealed on Tuesday stated that the RCMP’s Air Services Branch repeatedly flew its planes with overweight passengers or luggage and fuel.

The release of the report was delayed by a court action from the RCMP, which questioned wither the Commissioner has jurisdiction over the matter or not. Initially, the report was scheduled to be released around Nov. 17. According to its finding, the Commissioner alleged that the pilots underreported the weight of passengers and crew on two aircraft owned by the RCMP on the flight logs, entering impractical weights for the fuel or the luggage on board. The report quoted one of the pilots saying that “he himself had worked backwards to make the numbers work on paper.” The report highlights that there is still no information on the actual weight of the planes that were flown by the RCMP.

According to a recent press release by Commissioner Mario Dion, it was revealed that “our investigation did not conclude that the life, health or safety of persons was compromised as a result of these overweight flights.” It was added that “Canadian Aviation Regulations were nonetheless breached, which resulted in my making this finding of wrongdoing today. I am satisfied with the RCMP’s response on this matter, as they proactively put in place Corrective Action Plans to ensure full compliance with the Canadian Aviation Regulations.”
