Only a day after B.C. Mounties announced to have charged an Ontario senior, Garry Taylor Handlen, in two decades-old child murders, a private investigator, Lee Hanlon, publicly revealed more details about the accused. Police arrested Handlen in the killings of Kathryn-Mary Herbert and Monica Jack on Friday. Both victims were taken from their families in separate incidents in the 1970s.

Hanlon welcomed the announcement by the police and revealed exclusive details about Herbert’s death. Hanlon stated that “I was elated,” since “finally something’s going to happen.” According to Hanlon, Handlen lived in the Lower Mainland during the ‘70s and once dated a 16-year-old girl who was staying at the Herbert residence. He explained that “that’s how… the family knew him.” An Abbotsford resident, Herbert was killed in 1975 at the age of 11, whereas Jack disappeared from family’s home in Merritt in 1978 and died soon before her 13th birthday. Furthermore, Hanlon stressed that there are clear similarities between both murders and the killing of third Abbotsford teenager, Theresa Hildebrandt, in 1976. He highlighted that all three victims suffered blunt force trauma to the head and multiple broken facial bones.

Police is already suspecting linkage between the three cases but did not charge Handlen in Hildebrandt’s death. RCMP Supt. Ward Lymburner mentioned on Monday that “there is no evidence that we can bring forward toward the court at this point to put Mr. Handlen in the Hildebrandt investigation.” Mounties also stressed that their investigation is still ongoing.
