The RCMP has laid the Canada’s new anti-terror laws against a youth, i.e. 15-year-old Montreal teenager, for the first time related to committing robbery to benefit a terrorist group. The youth heard in a court room on Wednesday that the charges against him are related to robbing a convenience store for about $2,000 in October, with the intent to finance a trip overseas to join a terrorist group in the Middle East.
The youth will be defending charges including committing a robbery to fund terror activities and trying to leave the country to commit a criminal act abroad. According to the court documents, the youth wore a ski mask and brandished a large knife during the robbery. The boy pled not guilty in a Quebec courtroom on Wednesday, however he might still be facing up to 10 years in prison if convicted. In compliance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the youth’s identity has been kept a secret. The youth will undergo a psychiatric evaluation and his next court date is scheduled in January.
The officials have refrained from naming the terrorist group involved. However, it was disclosed that the authorities were informed by the boy’s father began suspecting his son had become radicalized. The stolen boy money was allegedly hidden in the backyard of the family home, which was found by his father, after which the father contacted authorities and told them his son was behaving strangely. Investigators have confirmed to have found jihadi-related material and videos on the boy’s computer after he was taken into custody.
