According to a recent press statement issued by the head of Toronto’s police union, Toronto Police Association president, Mike McCormack, has called on board chair, Alok Mukherjee, to resign after sharing a photo on Facebook that compares American police officers with terrorists. The press release issued by McCormack on Friday contained a screengrab of a photo shared on Mr. Mukherjee’s Facebook page earlier this week. The photo contained text reading “Americans Killed by Isis: 3, Americans killed by ebola: 2, Americans killed by the police: 500+ every year.”

In response to McCormack’s statement, Mr. Mukherjee alleged that he was “surprised” by the union’s reaction and stressed that he was only referring to American police officers and not Toronto. The image was found to be removed from Mr. Mukherjee’s page on Friday morning. Mr. McCormack mentioned in the statement that “Mukherjee has crossed the line. His lack of objectivity indicates he is no longer fit to sit on a police oversight body,” adding that “his sharing of this poster is clearly unprofessional, clearly unethical and clearly seeks to undermine the very people he is paid to oversee.”

However, Mr. Mukherjee highlighted that the post had nothing to do with policing in Toronto. He said that “my intent in putting that poster on my Facebook was to trigger conversation and thinking about the differences between what we face here and what’s happening the U.S. In fact our response has been very, very different.”
