Authorities have confirmed to have had to shoot and kill a bull moose behind a northeast Calgary home on Friday morning after a failed attempt to subdue it with a tranquilizer dart. According to the details of the incident, Calgary Police officers and Alberta Fish and Wildlife officials located the animal strolling through the parking lot of Marlborough Mall. The moose was there to avoid morning rush hour traffic and followed up to 600 block of Maryvale Way N.E., where it was cornered behind a home.

Calgary Police Sgt., Paul Magnus, mentioned in his remarks that “Fish and Wildlife attempted to tranquilize the animal, but the tranquilizer didn’t take,” adding that “it got penned into a backyard and when it turned on the officers, it had to be euthanized.” The homeowner of the house where the moose was shot, Diane Day, alleged to have heard a loud bang and rushed to have seen a “huge moose” in the backyard through the kitchen window. Day stated that “there were a bunch of police and wildlife officers,” adding “thank goodness they stayed back because this thing was wild. It cornered itself.” She also confirmed that the animal was indeed agitated even after being hit by the tranquilizer.

The officials stressed that they regret having to kill the moose, but said it because a priority in order to ensure public safety with the number of homes and elementary schools in the area. In addition to that, the offices were also allegedly tracking another moose in the city on Friday morning. The animal was reportedly spotted lying in a field in the Foothills Industrial Area.
