The provincial transit agency, Metrolinx, has revealed its proposed cost of riding the rail link from Union to Pearson airport on Wednesday, estimating an adult one-way fare to be $27.50, or $19 with a Presto card. According to a press conference hosted by Metrolinx president, Bruce McCuaig, and Premier, Kathleen Wynne, on Wednesday, it was announced that fares will be lower for long distance and with discounts.
It was explained that a family of five will be able to travel on a one way fare between Union Station and the airport for $55 and “qualified airport employees” can purchase a $10 one way fare, or an even cheaper monthly pass. Mr. McCuaig highlighted that “for the airport employee who travels to work and back five days a week, this monthly pass will average only $7.50 each way.” Additionally, the fair for an adult going from the Bloor station to the airport is recommended at $15.20, while Weston to Pearson has a regular fare of $16.50 or $11.40 with a Presto card. Mr. McCuaig stated that “we are confident travellers will choose our service because it’s faster, it’s cheaper and more reliable than other airport to downtown modes of transportation.”
However, criticizing the newly revealed fare rates, city councillor Josh Matlow urged on Twitter to keep the fares affordable for the average person. Mr. Matlow alleged that “Torontonians waited decades for rapid transit to Pearson. We know now, despite UP Express being built with our money, it wasn’t built for us.”
