Toronto Mayor John Tory has once again questioned Toronto Police Services Board chair, Alok Mukherjee, over another controversial Facebook photo allegedly posted by the chair in the past. The photo, posted on his page last year, makes light note of domestic abuse. Mr. Mukherjee has already suffered plenty criticism for posting a Facebook photo that compared American police officers to terrorists.

According to a screen grab of the photo posted on April, 2013, it said that “marriage is like a deck of cards,” adding that “in the beginning all you need is two hearts and a diamond. By the end, you wish you had a club and a spade.” The police board chair’s Facebook page was active untill last week and has been deleted since. In response to the growing criticism, Mr. Mukherjee mentioned in a statement e-mailed on Wednesday that he does not recall the photo and described its revelation as a smear campaign amid escalating hostilities between the police board and union in advance of contract negotiations.

Earlier this year, the board decided against renewing Chief Bill Blair’s contract as Mr. Mukherjee called for “fundamental transformation” within the force, i.e. a decision that drew a strong reaction from the Toronto Police Association. Mr. Mukherjee stated that “this is nothing more than another desperate attempt to drive me from my position on the board and distract from the serious work we have to do,” adding that “it’s time for us to focus on moving forward and stop this campaign of harassment.”
