Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has simply urged Prime Minister Stephen Harper to arrange a meeting as soon as possible. According to a letter addressed by Wynne to Harper on Thursday, the Premier asked the Prime Minister to end the “confrontation” that has characterized their relationship. Quite noticeably, it has been at least a year since both of them met.

During last spring’s election campaign, Wynne made degrading remarks against Harper by publicly accusing him of “smirking” in that closed-door sit-down when she presented him with Ontario’s demand for a better public pension plan. Thereafter, Mr. Harper refused to meet with her and responded to her requests for meeting this fall by asking her to have her cabinet ministers’ deal with his. Ms. Wynne finally fulfilled this request on Thursday, when six of her ministers sent letters to their federal counterparts and highlighted their demands on everything from help building transit to bigger equalization payments.

However, in addition to the letters by cabinet ministers, Wynne also addressed a letter directly to Mr. Harper and once again requested a meeting. She mentioned that “as vital as ministerial co-operation is, it is no substitute for leadership and collaboration at the top,” adding that “[one year] is too long a time between meetings of the Prime Minister and the Premier of Canada’s largest province, whose relationship should be one of collaboration, not confrontation.” Ms. Wynne is asking Mr. Harper for a meeting earlier in the New Year, closing the letter by wishing him and his wife a happy holiday.
