Winnipeg School Division has announced to have placed long time Kelvin High School technology teacher, Brad Badiuk, on paid leave amid investigation into his comments on Facebook regarding the aboriginal people. In the announcement, board chair Mark Wasyliw stated that “the WSD administration was made aware of the Facebook posting on Monday and immediately launched an investigation.”

In his remarks, Wasyliw confirmed that “once the investigation has been completed, the administration receives a recommendation from the Human Resources department as to any disciplinary action that it recommends,” adding that “it goes from sensitivity training all the way to loss of employment.” However, the board chair failed to speculate on how much time the investigation needs for completion. The senior aide to Grand Chief Derek Nepinak of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, Kevin Hart, had filed a complaint to Kelvin’s principal after learning about Badiuk’s post this past weekend.

Badiuk’s lengthy Facebook post said: “how long are aboriginal people going to use what happened as a crutch to suck more money out of Canadians?…as a people they (aboriginals) have contributed NOTHING or very little to the development of Canada. Just standing their (sic) with their hand out.” Although Manitoba Teachers’ Society president, Paul Olson, refused to discuss the individual case, he did mention that what teachers do on their own time is not a protection, if the teacher’s conduct brings the employer into disrepute, or raises questions about the person’s judgment or suitability as a teacher.
