Autopsies have determined that a drug overdose caused the deaths of two Moncton men last month.

Autopsy reports indicate that the two men, who police discovered deceased in anapartment on MacAleese Avenue on November 9, 2014, succumbed to an overdose of the drug fentanyl. Foul play has been ruled out. Since foul play has been ruled out, the names of the deceased are not being released.

During the course of the investigation, Codiac Regional RCMP seized a white, crystallized powder substance from the scene that is believed to have been purchased online. The analysis of the substance indicates that it is a derivative of fentanyl, a very potent synthetic drug normally prescribed for pain. The drug is considered to be very dangerous and potentially fatal.

“Trafficking of fentanyl in RCMP service areas in New Brunswick appears to be minimal at this time,” said Staff Sergeant Mark Janes with the Codiac Regional RCMP. “However, we are watching closely and taking measures to warn the public of the dangers of this drug in any form when not used under a physician’s instructions.”

RCMP are warning the public of the possibility that this substance could be found in someNew Brunswick communities and it may be combined with other illicit drugs, or consumed in a powder form. Since 2007, there have been six deaths linked to an accidental overdose of fentanyl in New Brunswick.
