Police have applauded the efforts of kind Surrey strangers in rescuing and identifying a three-year-old boy who was struck in the face and then abandoned by a man at the bus stop. According to the RCMP, several people alerted 911 about seeing a man hit a boy in the face at a bus stop near 152nd Street and 64th Avenue at around 11 a.m. on Saturday.

According to the police, the man, who seemed to be the boy’s caregiver, then boarded a bus and left the child on the street. Police said that “the boy was cared for by witnesses,” and “the boy was not readily identified and as such witnesses used social media sites, distributing his photograph in an attempt to identify the boy.” Eventually, police succeeded in identifying the boy and handing him over to his mother following an investigation.

Staff Sgt. Joe Johal applauded the employee at the Berezan Liquor Store, Lucy Ingram, who helped care for the boy until police arrived. Ingram alleged that it was “heartbreaking” how the man treated the boy and “it made me sick to my stomach, like he discarded him like he was a piece of garbage.” Ingram alleged that she was told about the boy playing alone in a field across the street by one of her regular customers. She said that “as soon as he saw me coming, he put his arms up and I grabbed him.”
