Montreal police have confirmed to have arrested a 21-year-old allegedly radicalized man, Jeffrey Labelle, who now faces terrorism-related charges for threatening to attack four police officers. Officially charged on Monday, Labelle will return to court on Tuesday. However, Labelle was arrested on Friday after the discovery of handwritten notes specifying which precincts would be attacked.

Head of the Montreal police union, Yves Francoeur, acknowledged that the incident of two police officers murdered in their squad car in New York City by a gunman gave a greater sense of urgency to ensuring police here in Canada stay safe. Francoeur stated that “our people must be vigilant at all times,” because “we see what is happening in Canada. Toronto has already secured their stations a few years ago and Ottawa is in the process of doing so.” It was revealed that police were contacted about the threat by Labelle’s relatives, who noticed significant changes in his way of dressing and his words. A spokesman for the Montreal police confirmed that Labelle was a recent convert to Islam.

However, Labelle’s grandmother, Sylvie Labelle, had a different opinion alleging that he was not dangerous. She said that “he wasn’t that kind of boy,” adding that “when he converted, he found inner peace. He wanted to take care of his mother and be the man of the house.” Admitting that Labelle had started to carry a machete, she said that it was to protect his mother from a violent person.
