Edmonton Police have confirmed to have arrested a 19-year-old suspect, Kyle Charles Ashton, related to the brutal assault and unfortunate death of 24-year-old Raad Hamza. The victim was allegedly beaten on the sidewalk in front of Billiard Club on Whyte Avenue and 105 Street at around 2:20 a.m. on Dec. 20, where he was left unconscious. Hamza was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where he died from head trauma.

Homicide detectives arrested Ashton on Wednesday morning and have laid several charges including manslaughter. Homicide detective, Dale Johnson, has revealed that no weapons are believed to be involved and witnesses were likely unaware of the severity of Hamza’s injuries at the time. He stated that “the assault happened very quickly, it likely transpired in less than ten seconds. So we’re not suggesting anybody had a means to intervene and stop it.”

According to the homicide detective, the victim and suspects were believed to be at the Billiard Club during the night and perhaps knew each other in some capacity. Johnson highlighted that the Billiard Club staff has remained helpful in the investigation and that the incident does not reflect on the bar or its management. Furthermore, Johnson confirmed that Hamza is also known to police due to his previous arrest in 2012, when several charges were also laid related to a non-fatal shooting in north Edmonton. The investigation is ongoing.
