In an unusual incident on Christmas Eve, two Montreal police officers helped deliver a baby in the back of a car at around 3 a.m. on Saturday. The officers were anxiously approached by a man in the north end of the city, who sought assistance for his wife who was in the advanced stages of labour in their family car. Thereafter, the officers helped the woman give birth to a little boy, born prematurely at 32 weeks, while other officers secured the street.

According to a statement issued by Montreal police spokesperson, Jean Pierre Brabant, the officers ensured that there was skin-to-skin contact between the mother and her son, and that both were warm before putting them into an ambulance. Brabant confirmed that they received a police escort to Sacré-Coeur Hospital and both are doing well now. Brabant stated that “It was a good story from there,” explaining that “the child was in good and, and police officers did their job. While police officers do receive first-aid training, they are never taught how to deliver babies, he says. “In this situation, they were acting on instinct.”

Whereas on the other hand, two Philadelphia police officers did the same at a downtown subway train just a few hours later. The officers guided her through the process while she was giving birth shortly before 6 p.m. Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority Chief, Thomas Nestel, mentioned on Twietter: “Transit Police SGT and PO deliver baby on Market Frankford El train!!!! WOOHOO!!! Now that’s a Christmas gift!!!”
