According to a press release issued by York Regional Police, it revealed to have observed an extraordinary upsurge in the number of impaired drivers this year as compared to 2013. In his remarks, York Regional Police Constable, Andy Pattenden, mentioned that “we have 1,354 drivers that have been arrested in York Region for alcohol-related driving offences,” adding that “it’s up significantly from last year when we had a total of 868 drivers.”

Whereas on the other hand, South Simcoe Police pointed out that even though it stopped 3,000 less vehicles this year, still there were more drivers arrested for impaired driving. South Simcoe Police Sargeant, Steve Wilson, stated that “it is disappointing but I guess the good news is our officers are getting those drivers off the road before they’re involved in a collision.” According to Wilson, one of the primary reasons for the greater number is that sober drivers are calling in to report erratic drivers more often.

Pattenden shared an incident when “we had a concerned citizen that called 911 to report a vehicle that was driving erratically near Centre Street in Richmond Hill.” It was added that “our officers responded quickly and were able to locate a black BMW that was actually driving on the sidewalk when officers got there. Before they were able to stop the vehicle, the BMW crashed into a bus shelter and injured two people.” Conclusively, it was stressed that police reminds drivers that they will have several RIDE programs out on New Year’s Eve that will be changing locations randomly throughout the night.
