Disregarding frequent assurances by the Conservative government that the next federal election will be in October, Canadian Legislature’s opposition parties are openly preparing for an early campaign. Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has insistently stated that he does not plans to hold election before Oct. 19. Spokesman for Mr. Harper, Jason MacDonald, further confirmed in an email on Monday that “October, 2015, it is, as the Prime Minister indicated.” Whereas a fundraising e-mail addressed to supporters by Conservatives on Dec. 27 also said there are “295 days until the next election.”
However, the New Democrats and the Liberals are still ignorant of all Conservatives assurances and want to be prepared for a spring election. Consequently, The Liberals’ website boasts to have nominated 182 candidates and held two candidate training sessions already. A party representative, Olivier Duchesneau, stated that “we have to be ready for a spring election.” Whereas on the other hand, the NDP has also announced to be its finalizing financing arrangements, including negotiating a campaign loan.
According to an e-mail to supporters on Dec. 28, the NDP openly stated that “if the pundits are right and Stephen Harper calls an early election, this could be the last fundraising deadline of our campaign.” NDP national director, Anne McGrath, mentioned that “we have a ‘what if’ scenario for the spring,” while pointing out that the Conservatives have moved election earlier from a fixed-election date before, i.e. when Parliament was dissolved in 2008 after the 2006 election that brought the Tories to power.
