The southwest B.C.’s emergency communications centre, E-Comm, has released a list of top 10 most weird and unfitting calls made to 911 by Lower Mainland residents in 2014. Among the most unsuitable calls highlighted by E-Comm were those saying that a slice of pizza is stale, Wi-Fi at the coffee shop isn’t working or someone’s lost their glasses.  Moreover, the list also included people complaining about the quality of their take-out food.

Highlighting those caller who take 911 to be an information service instead of emergency dispatchers, some wanted to know if today’s a state holiday, phone numbers for taxis or travel agents. E-Comm spokesperson, Jody Robertson, highlighted that those who make nuisance calls to 911 are in fact wasting valuable resources for people who actually encounter real life-and-death emergencies, potentially putting lives at risk. She stressed that “911 is a life line, not an information line,” while pointing out that “911 call takers cannot answer questions about how long power outages will last, when the clocks turn back, or other non-emergency questions.”

The report stressed that true emergencies are exclusive to situations requiring immediate action by police, fire or medical situations, which are most commonly needed when someone’s health, safety or property is in danger or a crime is in progress. One of the 911 call takers, Warner Yang, complained that “we’re here to help people with real emergencies” so “if someone calls 9-1-1 about internet problems that means I’m not available to help someone who really needs it.”
