Police and RCMP have announced to have reopened the downtown core of Fort Saskatchewan after keeping the area cordoned off without providing any reason to the media on Tuesday morning. Although there are still very few details known, Mounties have said that it was due to a “police incident” and has been handed over to the Edmonton Police Service. All that’s know was that Downtown Fort Saskatchewan was completely blocked off entire Tuesday morning, while the RCMP Major Crimes Unit assisted the Edmonton Police Service in an Edmonton-based investigation.

According to Fort Saskatchewan Mayor Gale Katchur, she was kept in the loop about the whole situation as it unfolded, and alleged that the media blackout of the incident was kept out of concern for the first responders who were on the scene. Katchur stated that “they had the street contained that they needed to and they were just turning people away from downtown Fort Saskatchewan so the RCMP have done an excellent job, it would have been nice if we could have provided more information but it’s very critical that we keep people safe in the imminent area.”

Katchur’s office has a direct view of the VN restaurant from her office window. She confirmed that the 100 Avenue and 103 Street was kept closed all mooring, while also confirming that the glass doors and windows of the restaurant are indeed smashed. Additionally, workers in the downtown core reportedly confirmed that they were told to stay inside the building but no evacuation order was placed.
