Edmonton Police have explained the events that unfolded in one of the most dreadful crimes of the year, when nine people were killed in Edmonton overnight until the primary suspect committed suicide. Edmonton Police Chief, Rod Knecht, labeled the crime as a “senseless mass murder of eight people,” while confirming that seven victims were found in a residence on the city’s north side on early Tuesday morning. The body of eighth victim was found in a home across town on late Monday night while the suspect’s body was discovered in a Vietnamese restaurant in the neighbouring community of Fort Saskatchewan on early Tuesday.

During a press conference at police headquarters on Tuesday afternoon, Knecht stated that “it is a tragic day in Edmonton,” adding that “there is no risk to the broader public and these events do not appear to be gang related, but rather tragic incidents of domestic violence.” The police chief explained that the incident started at 6:52 p.m. on Monday, when police was called on to a home in south Edmonton after a man entered the home and shot and killed a woman in her 30s before fleeing.

Almost 90 minutes later, police assistance was again sought at a home in north Edmonton after a man’s family reported about him being miserable and potentially suicidal. However, police failed to find the man or anything suspicious and hence left. Eventually it was after midnight, when Knecht says police found the bodies of seven people inside: three women, two men and a boy and a girl.
