Toronto Fire Services have confirmed to have responded to a three-alarm blaze on Camwood Ave., near York Mills Blvd. and Don Mills Rd., at around 7 a.m. on Thursday. A senior homeowner and lone occupant of the home is feared dead. The incident was reported by a neighbour who spotted the flames, however it appears that the fire started several hours before the call was made.

Division Commander, Andrew Kostiuk, explained that “it was probably burning for two or three hours before we were actually notified.” He said that the home was completely immersed in flames when the fire crews arrived, revealing that a total of 65 firefighters battled the blaze for several hours. After taking control of the fire, the rescue workers started the search for a 68-year-old man. However, Kostiuk explained that “we’ve been able to look everywhere that we can actually see from the outside, into the bedrooms, and we haven’t been able to locate the gentleman we’re looking for at this time.”

Regretfully, Kostiuk informed that the man is still suspected to be inside the home but the entire ground floor has collapsed into the basement. Consequently, the crew is waiting for heavy equipment in order to move the debris and continue search for the missing man. The firefighters successfully restrained the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes, but a firefighter suffered burns to his forehead. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to investigate and determine the cause of the fire.
