The OPP has confirmed to be looking for two missing snowmobilers who were last seen travelling on the ice on Jack Lake near Grigg’s Island, i.e. north of Peterborough. According to the OPP, they were informed by a group of cottagers celebrating New Year’s Eve, who witnessed the snowmobilers out of the window as they crossed the lake. However, cottagers claim that suddenly both snowmobiles just disappeared into the ice.

A media relations officer for Peterborough County OPP, Jason Folz, confided that the fire rescue crews failed to get closer than 40 metres from a hole in the ice. According to Folz, the search was made difficult by high winds, darkness and very thin ice. Additionally, the cottagers reportedly said that almost two days ago, “you could have driven a boat on that lake.” Hence, the police is searching under the assumption that the recent cold created a thin sheet of ice, hence concluding that the conditions for snowmobiles would have been extremely treacherous. Folz confirmed than an underwater search and recovery unit from Gravenhurst is on its way to the scene.

It was highlighted that immersion in cold water is extremely dangerous due to the great shock which sets in immediately upon entering the water. Conclusively, Folz stated that “basically what the OPP is saying and our mantra for this one is no ice is safe ice,” adding that “they have to treat it with the utmost of respect.”
