Environment Canada have issued extreme cold, heavy snow and freezing rain alerts all across the country, warning Canadians to brace themselves for extremely cold temperatures and snow problems. Canadians are urged to be prepared for continued dangerous driving conditions and transit delays this weekend. In addition to that, flight delays and cancellations have accumulated from the past several days, while Air Canada and WestJet warn travellers that storms in Atlantic Canada, Ontario and Quebec would disrupt many flights.
As of early Saturday afternoon, Southern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area were completely covered in snow as the weather reached to freezing rain in the evening. Environment Canada meteorologist, Geoff Coulson, warned that “it’s going to be a real mess.” Whereas Weather Network meteorologist, Kelly Sonnenburg, alleged that “once we see the cold front pass tomorrow morning, temperatures will begin to drop quickly. Any precipitation left on the ground will begin to freeze over leaving for very slick driving conditions.” Winds are expected to go as high 70-100km/h on Sunday evening.
Whereas on the other hand, Ottawa is also witnessing at least 10 cm of snow before it transitions to freezing rain on Saturday, which is expected to last till Sunday. Ontario and Quebec are anticipated to see between 5 to 15 cm of snow. Majority areas of B.C., including Metro Vancouver, are also under winter storm warnings on Saturday. The Vancouver area will likely see another 10 cm of snow on Sunday. There are extreme cold weather alerts across southern Manitoba.
