Several dozen skiers and snowboarders were stuck on a broken chairlift for hours at a ski resort near Ottawa on Saturday. The chairlift at Mont Ste. Marie, i.e. located in Lac-Sainte-Marie, Que., failed due to mechanical issues and shut down sometime around noon, after which its riders had to be rescued. Co-owner of resort, Bob Suderman, confirmed that all 80 riders of the chairlift were successfully rescued soon before 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, the chairlift staff, adult riders and other volunteers attempted to cheer up fellow children stuck on the chairlift as they endured the cold temperatures. One such volunteer on the lift, Madeline Moffatt, said that “I was entertaining these four kids on the chairlift and two were so stunned they couldn’t even talk,” adding that “they were also very, very cold.” Ski Patrol helped skiers and snowboarders rappel down to safety. Suderman announced that “we used climbing equipment, and people got down that way — in seat harnesses” and “we threw a climbing apparatus over the cable and then people just attached themselves to it and lowered down.”
According to the management, it had decided to rescue the chairlift passengers immediately it stopped due to the cold winter temperatures. It was explained that the chairlift got stuck due to a malfunctioning ball bearing at the end of the lift. The repairs couldn’t be performed safely with riders on the lift. Lac-Sainte-Marie is approximately 82 kilometres north of Ottawa.
