After completing a disastrous road trip that slid the team in the NHL standings, the Leafs have announced to have fired its head coach Randy Carlyle. Hired by the Leafs to replace former coach Ron Wilson on March 2, 2012, Carlyle led the team to the playoffs the following season but has struggled to get a consistent effort from his players since.

For the time being, the duties of head coach will be performed by his two assistant coaches, Steve Spott and Peter Horachek. The announcement was made during a press conference by Leafs general manager, Dave Nonis, just 90 minutes before the team was scheduled to practice on Tuesday morning. He said that “I want to thank Randy for all of his hard work and dedication,” adding that “it’s never an easy decision to make when changing your leadership but our team was not trending in the right direction and we felt an immediate change was necessary.” During his time as the head coach for the Leafs, Carlyle led the team to have a record of 91 wins, 78 losses, and 19 overtime/shootout losses in 188 games. Whereas overall, Carlyle holds a career NHL coaching record of 364 wins, 260 losses, and 80 overtime/shootout losses in 704 games between the Anaheim Ducks and Toronto.

Mr. Carlyle was laid off by the team even though it was clinging to a playoff spot with a record of 21-16-3, i.e. one point ahead of the Bruins for the second wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. Most recently, the team mad had a comeback in a brutal five-game, post-Christmas stretch on Sunday.
