More than 1,000 Montrealers fought the weather to stand together outside French consulate in the city on Wednesday night and remember those killed in a shameless violent attack in Paris earlier in the day. Even though the temperature dwelled around -21 degrees, there was an impressive crowd that lit candles, embraced each other and sang the French national anthem.

Majority protestors also held pens or pencils above their heads in order to honor the ten journalists who worked at French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, but were gunned down in the line of duty. The three shooters also targeted two police officers who tried to intercept and thwart the massacre. One of the protestors, Jeff Begley, alleged that “it has to stop” because “it seems to me that the magazine was saying ‘enough of religious extremism.’ And I think everyone needs to say ‘enough.’” In addition to that, some of the attendees even held printouts of Charlie Hebdo’s one of the most controversial cartoons featuring Muslim leaders and the Prophet Muhammad. Likewise, chants of “Charlie!” and “Liberty!” could also be heard as more and more people joined.

In addition to the successful demonstration at the French consulate, some organizers also attempted to unite people in solidarity outside Montreal city hall in the evening. However, the effort was thwarted as shouts of “Religion! Finished!” and loud boos were heard in the crowd of about 200 people. At the time, Mayor Denis Coderre called for respect and tolerance among Montrealers of every faith.
