Reports are claiming that New Brunswick’s only NDP MP, Yvon Godin, will soon be announcing his decision to not run in the next federal election. However, Godin has only confirmed that he will be making an important announcement either on Friday afternoon or early next week but failed to verify the reports of his retirement. He stressed that “I’m the only one who knows what will happen [at the announcement].”
Sources close to Godin allege that he is delaying the announcement since he wants the party to find his suitable replacement candidate before he announces retirement from federal politics. Representative of the riding of Acadie-Bathurst, Godin, admitted that he will decide in the coming week whether or not to retire as an MP. He said that “I’ll have been there for 18 years. When is the right time? I don’t think there’s ever a right time. That’s why the decision is so hard,” adding that “any which way I will be going, it’ll be one of the hardest decisions to take.”
First elected to the House of Commons in 1997, Godin remained a sheer critique of Employment Insurance reforms by the former Liberal government. In the recent 2011 election, Godin secured almost 70 per cent of the vote for the NDP in his riding, i.e. approximately 32,000 votes. He gained a 53-point victory over second place Progressive Conservative candidate, Louis Robichaud, and secured largest margin of victory for any NDP MP in that election.
