Toronto Mayor John Tory assured to the reporters on Friday that he adamantly believes that more needs to be done to address homelessness in the city, while highlighting the need to do better in improving mental health care for sake of that. Mr. Tory vowed to provide more funding in the 2015 budget to help address shelter capacity.
Mayor Tory spent most of Thursday night on the streets with city staff and urged homeless people to seek shelter. In his remarks, Tory stressed that he is “troubled” to see that some homeless people refuse help and choose to stay on the street in subzero temperatures. He said that “I was just troubled about how difficult that is because I think those people would be better off if we can give them some help and a place to sleep that is not on the street.” He highlighted that “we have to have them agree to go to a place where they know they are going to get support and help.” Elaborating on his announcement to increase shelter capacity, Tory said that “we’re going to try to do some things to alleviate the situation,” since “there is no question the shelter system at present is at capacity.”
Furthermore, Mr. Tory confessed that mental illness is one of the key reasons that force some people to stay on the street. He stressed that “the mental illness situation overall in this city and in this province and in this country is still in a state of being a scandal in terms of the degree to which we don’t provide the care of the kind people need that have mental health issues,” adding that “I do believe however that we’ve got a provincial government in place right now, and a premier, who shares that concern.”
