Woodstock First Nation man charged in connection to gunfire exchange with police

A 35-year-old Woodstock First Nation man has been arrested following a serious incident involving a firearm that occurred on Eagles Nest Drive on January 11, 2015. Woodstock RCMP received a complaint shortly after 3 p.m., that an intoxicated man had a loaded riffle and was uttering death threats. Police responded and evacuated residents in the surrounding area.

During the incident, there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the police and the suspect barricaded himself in a residence. 

The RCMP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT), negotiators and a police dog were called in to assist with the situation. The suspect surrendered to police shortly after 2 a.m. on January 12 without further incident. He was immediately taken into custody and transported to the hospital to be assessed by medical staff who treated him for non life-threatening injuries and he was released from hospital that morning. No one else was injured.

The area where the incident occurred has been cordoned off by police for RCMP’sForensic Identification experts to collect any evidence which could be related to the incident.

The suspect remains in police custody and will appear in Woodstock Provincial Court on January 12 in the afternoon to face related charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
