Toronto Mayor John Tory has announced to forgo his campaign pledge to freeze costs for passengers and instead vowed to propose an increase in the regular transit fares by 10 cents and promised to show people real improvements to service. The plan was announced at a North York school just a day before Toronto’s proposed 2015 budget is to be presented. Mr. Tory’s plan also proposed free fares for children 12 and under.

In his remarks, Mr. Tory alleged that the increased fares are expected to raise $43-million per year. Mayor Tory urged the city to boost the TTC subsidy by $38-million, i.e. up to a total of around $479-million per year. He vowed to reveal more specifics about the money with the budget on Tuesday. Whereas on the other hand, TTC chief executive Andy Byford mentioned in his remarks that these were the improvements he was waiting for since he took his post. He stated that “this is an historic day for the TTC” and “this is what we have argued for long and hard.”

Among other proposed improvements, the plan vows to restore routes cut in 2011, reduce wait times, 10-minute or better service in many areas and up to four more express bus routes. Since the entire plan is yet to be approved by the council, Mr. Tory stressed that “I am going to be fighting hard to get this approved because I think it is very important to people, and families and the economy ‎and bringing Toronto together.”
