Addressing the audience at his two-day caucus retreat in London, Ont. on Tuesday, Liberal leader Justin Trudeau criticized the Conservative government for abandoning Canadians in hard-hit manufacturing regions.

In his remarks, Mr. Trudeau stated that “the people of southwestern Ontario are amazingly resilient and have demonstrated that moving beyond a manufacturing-based economy is something that they’re willing to do.” Trudeau added that “but as is the case in so many parts of the country, they need a partner in Ottawa … a government that will work with the provinces and municipalities.” Mr. Trudeau is anticipated to harshly criticize Mr. Harper and his administration during the two-day Liberal retreat that mainly involving closed door meetings. Quite expectedly, the primary focus of all these meetings and activities would be to devise a strategy to win this year’s federal election.

Addressing Liberal MPs, Trudeau stated that “I hope everyone took advantage of a little bit of family time over Christmas because this year’s going to be a lot of work and we’re going to be pulling out all the stops and rolling up our sleeves.” He alleged that “there’s a lot of uncertainty in our economy, in our world. And people are going to be looking for steady, strong leadership.” Trudeau stressed that the key to electoral success will be having a favorable turnout in Ontario and pointed out that this might just be becoming more evident due to the Conservative government’s failure to help the province’s struggling manufacturing sector.
